Another great year of footy awaits in 2010, with the Hong Kong Dragons celebrating its landmark 20th anniversary (1990-2010).

Planning is getting underway now with an AGM to elect the new committee penned in for Wednesday (13 Jan) at Bulldogs LKF from 7pm. Anyone interested in contributing to the club, offering or support or seeking nomination for a committee role is encouraged to attend.

As with every year, it will begin in earnest in March as we hit the training track. Some old stalwarts and club figures will be absent as they move on from Hong Kong, while new faces will also abound. Whether you attend the committee meeting or not, it is beholden upon each member to seek out new recruits to ensure we build on the solid work that has seen this club become an Asian powerhouse over the past two decades.

Given the significance of our anniversary year, it is perhaps appropriate that the season will culminate with one of the biggest events ever staged in Asia – the Shanghai World Expo. The Asian Championships will be a part of this 70 million-person extravaganza in mid-October, on the same card as an AFL match between the Melbourne Demons and Brisbane Lions.

Throughout the year there will be more tours and the committee is confident it can overcome the ground availability issues that have plagued it in the past to host at least one international tour on our own soil.

The upcoming AGM is a chance for you to have a say in what this milestone year brings. Get involved. The meeting will usher in some major reshuffling, including a change at the helm of the club. Some new faces have put their hand up for a role but more are always needed. Although it seems largely seamless when you’re playing and touring, a massive amount of work goes into keeping the club as successful as it is.

And finally, an omen of good fortune – the traditional gift for a 20th anniversary is … China. Our present awaits in Shanghai.

Bring on 2010 …..
